[Intro] Digital Landfill is a compost heap that Mark Napier, with his programming
techniques, displays in fragmented layers to create unusual patterns and
images. Users may view the files that have been dumped, or may add their own
virtual refuse to the site. Contributions range from discarded pornography to
CIA web pages. Napier says, "Now, with Digital Landfill, web citizens have an
economical, safe, clean, and environmentally friendly way to dispose of
unsightly scrap data." Stressing the tension between analog and digital
existence by creating an unneeded product, Napier explores the contemporary
confusion humanity experiences while dangling between virtuality and reality.
