[Intro] Created by Tuomo Tammenpaa on January 8, 2000, Need offers a critique of commercialization and false desire. Upon entering the site, visitors are confronted with the same aesthetic qualities that are commonplace in contemporary advertising. The graphic design imagery is enhanced by bold, flashing words, catchy icons, and candy-coated plastic pink. This produces a consumer-friendly environment that invites viewers to taste more.

Tammenpaa's work parodies the way consumer culture functions. The concept behind Need is that no real product exists, but trendy marketing ploys are used to create the desire for one. "Need is an artificial brand… Marketing [this] nonexistent product becomes possible if the image is powerful enough.npaa).
