I-Section created by Friederike Paetzold

I-Section is a 1999 Turbulence commission from the Jerome Foundation
and is "about the aesthetics of dissection, the emotional resonance
associated with internal organs and what is left when the body has been
taken apart. Inspired by 18th-century anatomical mannequins, the piece
takes the form of an interactive dissection with metaphorical ruminations
rather than scientific explanations for results." I-Section plays like a
classic mystery as the viewer follows instructions, reads clues and unveils
new links by moving multiple layers of organs. This work combines
elements of beauty and horror to create an interesting do-it-yourself
dissectional experience for the viewer and may require repeated
explorations to understand the metaphors presented best. Paetzold
is also an accomplished designer whose work can be viewed here.
