HYPERTEXUAL CONSCIOUSNESS (1995-1997)
Soon after arriving at Brown University in 1995, Amerika
immediately began creating an entirely new work of theoretical
art called "Hypertextual Consciousness." This
evolving work of online critifiction was yet another
conceptual art experiment that tackled many of the themes/issues
that he found prescient during the course of developing
GRAMMATRON. "When writing for the more fluid fields
of cyberspace," says Amerika, "I found that
fiction, faction, and nonfiction, all began to blur,
and that theoretical concepts could easily be morphed
into concept-characters whose computer programmed behaviors
fed into a fictionalization process that made the act
of writing theory feel much more like a narratively-driven
form of hyperrhetoric." Soon he was "exhibiting
theory" all around the digital art world and the
signature-style of HTC became a prototype for online
critical art making. |
